King Benjamin once taught:
“And behold, all that he requires of you is to keep his commandments; and he has promised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth vary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do keep his commandments he doth bless you and prosper you.”
That promise is woven throughout the Book of Mormon. Again and again, prophets remind us that prosperity follows obedience.
What Is True Prosperity?
Many believe money itself is evil. But Paul clarified:
“For the love of money is the root of all evil...”
Money is not the problem. The danger arises when we love wealth more than we love God. The Book of Mormon teaches that prosperity—both spiritual and temporal—is a blessing when used righteously.
Lehi declared:
“Inasmuch as those whom the Lord God shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem shall keep his commandments, they shall prosper upon the face of this land...”
From the Jaredites to the Nephites, history shows that when people obeyed God, they enjoyed peace, safety, and abundance. When they forgot Him, pride led to destruction.

The Prosperity Cycle
The Book of Mormon illustrates a repeating pattern:
“At the very time when he doth prosper his people... then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God.”
The Book of Mormon illustrates a repeating pattern:
- Obedience → Prosperity
- Prosperity → Pride
- Pride → Rebellion & Suffering
- Suffering → Repentance
- Repentance → Obedience (and the cycle begins again)
“At the very time when he doth prosper his people... then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God.”
The Purpose of Prosperity
The Lord gives abundance not so we can boast, but so we can bless. Jacob taught:
“Before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God... and after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good.”
True prosperity means utilizing our resources to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and bless those in need.

A Promise That Stands Today
The promise is clear and eternal:
“Inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land.”
This applies to individuals, families, and nations. Heber C. Kimball reminded the Saints:
“Brethren and sisters, remember all your duties and perform them, and the Lord Almighty will bless you and prosper you in all things which you set your hands to do.”
God’s promise has never changed.
When we love Him, keep His commandments, and remember those in need, He blesses us with true prosperity—peace, safety, joy, and the ability to serve.

The pattern is clear: Obedience brings prosperity.
When God’s people kept His commandments, they were blessed. When they forgot Him, they fell. The same promise is alive today—for you, your family, and your nation.
“Inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land.”
